FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Oct. 28, 2024  CONTACT: NAM Media Relations

Washington, D.C. – The Innovation Research Interchange—the innovation division of the National Association of Manufacturers—extends heartfelt congratulations to Demis Hassabis, the 2021 winner of the IRI Medal and co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, for being awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

This prestigious recognition comes in celebration of his groundbreaking work alongside colleague John Jumper, whose artificial intelligence model AlphaFold2 has revolutionized the field of protein structure prediction, offering tremendous benefits to science and humanity.

“Demis noted in his acceptance speech to the IRI that AI is a bit like the Hubble Telescope—the ultimate tool to help scientists see further in whatever domain they’re studying—and his work on predicting protein structure represents a monumental advancement for the tool many are utilizing in their daily lives,” said IRI Executive Director Paul Hartgen. “This Nobel moment not only acknowledges the revolutionary advancements AlphaFold2 has brought to the scientific community, but also marks a significant milestone in the broader application of AI in scientific discovery.”
