TRACK Workshop: IP Strategy Development and Execution for Business

The purpose of this course is to provide participants with frameworks, guidelines and processes needed to develop and execute an IP strategy, particularly a patent strategy. Participants will learn how to develop a patent strategy that supports business goals, marketing objectives, protects product roadmaps and offsets R&D costs. Organizational information and real-world case studies will be provided regarding how to create and operate a patent and/or licensing organization.

After the course participants will be able to formulate a rough patent strategy that supports its company’s goals and is implementable within the confines of the resources, culture and management of the company and its stakeholders.

The course is designed to be useful to small and/or private organizations as well as enterprise-level public corporations.

  • Introduction to patent strategy and its required components
  • Cost of NOT having a patent strategy
  • Types of patent strategies and the business strategies they support
  • Organizational structure and resources required to support various patent strategies
  • General tools and processes for operations including building and maintaining the patent portfolio and patent and technology licensing
    • What, when, how and where to patent
    • Agreements/contracts
  • Budgeting for IP Strategy execution
  • Building a patent culture to build the portfolio including incentive programs and preventing leaks

Who should attend:

The course is designed for innovation managers, business leaders, legal personnel, product managers and engineering leaders who are measured via company performance and/or have been tasked with developing a patent strategy, protecting innovation, minimizing litigation threats, gaining competitive advantage, monetizing non-product technology, building a secondary revenue stream and/or offsetting R&D costs.
