TRACK Workshop: Portfolio Management in R&D

This course is designed to provide an introduction to portfolio management in research and development. In it, the participants will learn about both the strategic and financial valuation of proposed projects – and multiple ways one might prioritize a list of projects.  Key concepts such as product pipelines, product life cycles, and product horizons will be covered.  Participants will learn the strengths and weaknesses of applying common metrics such as risk-adjusted net present value and internal rate of return.  This course will also cover the importance of matching one’s portfolio process to the culture of decision making at one’s company.   Participants will also learn scenario analysis and product roadmaps.
The course will feature practical illustrations based on the real-world experiences of the instructor.  The course will include hands-on break-out sessions that will give participants confidence in applying these concepts.   Note that this course will not use (nor advocate for) any specific commercially available portfolio management software. Upon completion, participants will quickly be able to participate in and lead portfolio planning activities that will augment their technical and strategic work, thereby creating more value for their organizations.

The session will include break-out exercises to work with the tools and techniques in order to evaluate understanding and also build connections with the other participants.

Who should attend this course:

The course is designed for those in innovation functions or within businesses who have responsibility for developing and bringing to market new business concepts.  It is useful both for practitioners developing new business concepts and for those who manage the innovation function. This course covers a broad range of business issues and can be viewed as a springboard to the participant’s professional advancement. 

About the Instructor:
Dr. Spencer Pugh is an executive with 35 years of experience in technology development, product commercialization, and business management.   He is the Principal of Prospect Ridge Consulting, LLC, and serves on the Board of Directors of the start-up MagPlasma.  Most recently, he was Vice-President, Research and Development, for Michelman, a specialty chemical company headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.   His global R&D team developed coatings and additives for printing, packaging, and composite applications.  From 2005 to 2015, Dr. Pugh was with Battelle in Columbus, Ohio, where he was the Vice-President and General Manager of the Energy and Environment Global Business Unit.  With offices and laboratories in the US and the UK, his 300+ person team delivered R&D results in oil and gas exploration and production; alternative energy systems; electric grid management; environmental assessment, monitoring and remediation; environmental chemical analysis; and agrochemical formulation and evaluation. Before coming to Battelle, Dr. Pugh was a Senior Laboratory Head in Research and Development with Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New York.  His team developed new products for enhanced performance, improved manufacturability, and reduced cost for Kodak’s manufacturing plants in China, France, and the U.S.  He holds a B.S. in Chemistry and Physics from The College of William and Mary and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Stanford University.   Dr. Pugh is also a Six Sigma Black Belt and a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP), licensed by the Licensing Executives Society. He has been active in the Innovation Research Interchange (IRI) for 15 years and has served on its Board of Directors twice.
