The Industrial Research Institute announces Susan M. Gaud, Senior Director, Kraft Foods R&D, as Chairman for 2005-2006

Members elect Richard R. Paul of Boeing as Vice Chairman, as well as new Directors from Battelle, Hershey Company, Agilent Technologies, Honeywell, and Eastman Chemical.

Arlington, VA - May 18, 2005 - The Industrial Research Institute (IRI), the foremost organization of senior research and development executives working together to enhance the effectiveness of technological innovation, announced today the succession of leaders and newly elected members of its Board of Directors. Susan M. Gaud, Director of External Technology and Emerging Science and Technology  at Kraft Foods, is Chairman for 2005-2006, succeeding Miles P. Drake, Vice President and CTO of Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.  R. Kent Crawford, Vice President of Engineering, North America Operating Division, Square D, is Chariman-Elect.  Richard R. Paul, Vice President, Strategic Development  & Analysis, Phantom Works, Boeing, is the newly elected Vice Chairman. Board leaders serve a term of four years as vice chairman, chairman-elect, chairman, and past chairman.  

One of Susan Gaud's responsibilities in her position as Senior Director, Kraft Foods R&D, is the development and execution of a strategy for accessing and leveraging external resources.  In this role she works with scientists and engineers to facilitate the effective and strategic use of external resources.   Susan grew up in Boston, received a B.A. degree in  chemistry from Connecticut College in New London, and earned her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Northwestern University.  She also spent several years as a research associate at Yale.  She joined Kraft in Glenview, Illinois in 1978 and received an MBA in Finance from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management a few years after joining Kraft.  She is an active member of several professional societies including The American Chemical Society and The Industrial Research Institute.  She continues her close association with Northwestern Chemistry and Kellogg School of Management.  She is married and enjoys tennis and golf.

Five new directors have also been elected to  IRI's Board: Richard B. Chapas, Director, Industrial Collaboration at Battelle; Ronald R. Dressler, Senior Manager, Planning And Information Analysis, The Hershey Company; Kay Gilles, Director, University Relations, Agilent Technologies, Inc.; Raymond L. Stark, Vice President, Technology, Honeywell International, Inc.; and Stewart L. Witzeman, Director, Technology Strategy, Eastman Chemical Company
