The assessment of early-stage technologies is a critical but often overlooked step common to R&D, new product development, and open innovation processes. Assessment processes are necessary for decision-making purposes in the management and commercialization of an organization’s own IP portfolio, as well as for evaluation of opportunities enabled by externally-developed technology. In this month’s brown bag webinar, Jeff Cope from RTI International will present a structured approach for the assessment of early-stage technologies. RTI’s approach has been applied and refined over four decades of advisement to university, corporate, public and private lab clients on the best commercialization opportunities emerging from their R&D activities. In a repeat performance from the IRI External Technology Network presentation this spring, Jeff will outline a staged approach for assessment, key questions to ask at each stage, and provide suggested frameworks to use for evaluation.
